Clear Away Your Lawn
Your first step in spring lawn care should be to clear away all of the debris that might have accumulated on your lawn. This is problematic for two reasons. First, it can jam up your mower or other lawn equipment. Second, it can interfere with your yard's ability to absorb the helpful nutrients you will apply later.
You will want to pick up big pieces, such as branches and twigs. You'll also want to clear away any leaves and thatch. Aim to leave behind less than a half-inch of thatch. As you are cleaning up your lawn, look for any matted areas where blades are sticking together. One key lawn grown tip is to break up these matted areas because they can make it harder for new grass to grow through it.
Prepare Your Mower
Your mower is an important part of your lawn maintenance. It needs to be well-maintained to give you the efficient and quality grass care you seek. If you didn’t do so before storing, you will want to change the oil, air filter and spark plugs. You should also give it a good clean and clear out any debris from the undercarriage.
Once your mower is all cleaned up, it's time to check the mower blades. When the blades get dull, they tend to rip grass instead of cut it. This reduces the efficiency of your grass care. It can also result in damage to your yard. Make sure your blades are sharp enough to quickly cut through grass and, when it comes time, be sure to replace them.
Nourish Your Lawn
Many lawn growing tips center on giving your yard the nourishment it needs to thrive. If you notice any bare spots, start by planting new seed there. You will want to water the new seed at least once a day until the grass is tall enough to be mowed. This is either two inches high or the same height as the grass around it.
Of course, we couldn't talk about lawn maintenance without mentioning those pesky weeds and bugs. If your yard struggles with these hazards, stock up on the necessary products to help prevent and kill those issues.
A key part of grass care is using fertilizers. You'll want to wait until after your first mowing before you add the fertilizer. It's a valuable resource to help provide the nourishment needed to promote growth.
Cut Your Lawn
The last stage of spring lawn care is mowing the overgrowth. Aim for cutting about 1/3 of the grass blade. For your first month and a half of spring, you should mow your lawn every five days. This will prevent your yard from getting too high and then getting cut in a way that stunts the root.
